Simply Pom Poms*

It was just a couple of days ago when hundreds of thousands of Vancouverites looked up into the sky to find nothing but bits of snow falling down onto the city once again during the end of February.

My parents frowned at the sight of the snow and started digging up for shovels in our garage the very next day when it finally stopped snowing. Luckily, I managed to make some use of the white scenery before it was all gone! =)




I haven't been crocheting any new projects lately due to school assignments and midterms, and Kappa (green doll at the back) was one of the few finished projects that I had at home which has not yet been posted on my blog ~ The scene looked rather plain with just Kappa in it, so I quickly made a couple of little creatures to brighten up the picture by using the fastest and easiest way possible... POM POMS!!

A Rainy Christmas 2010

"Last Christmas, I gave you my heart..."




I was hoping it would be a white Christmas this year since the news had earlier reported that winter 2010 would be the coldest winter in the past 50 years.  However, according to the weather report for the past few days, this year's Christmas would not be a white one, but would be a rainy one instead.  And so this morning, I woke up, opened up my window blinds and found that indeed the weather report was correct... the day started off with a wet, dull morning.

On the other hand, the malls and streets outside have been filled with warm Christmas music, making me feel the joy in air without needing to see any snow on the ground!  To decorate my house for the annual Christmas party held at my house, I decided to crochet a music band and put it next to our fire place (see photo above).

Domo was featured earlier under a previous post.  I wanted it to be part of the band just because the position of its hands seemed perfect for playing the drums. =P  I gave it an extra Christmas hat to give it some more of a Christmasy theme ~ 





Kronos the bear was made using a similar pattern as my Mochi bear featured in another post of mine.  The design of the scarf was inspired by a scarf that I saw being sold at Banana Republic~ (their scarf was much prettier of course!)





Tami is the one with the big heart on its tummy.  It's supposed to be a squirrel. =)

It's September...

In Vancouver, September is the month when you realize summer's already over and rain starts hitting down towards the city.  Of course... it also hints to the start of a brand new school year!  ... Excited?  Not really.

For the past three weeks, I've been trying to adjust back to my school life once again, and there was hardly any time for me to concentrate on crocheting.  Midterms are approaching yet I'm still on a bit of a holiday mood. =(

Here's an idea of what I've been up to in my lab class:

You're probably thinking... what in the world is this?!  It's actually an experiment for my lab where all students inoculate a couple bottles of media using sewage/pond water.  After that, we incubate it with light and wait for bacteria to grow! XD

Of course, my school life isn't all about being super nerdy. =P  I'm also involved with some student clubs on campus ~ For one of the clubs, there was an icebreaker last Friday and I was lucky enough to win a huge plush as a prize (the large one in the photo below)!

The doll was HUUUGE!  I think just the size of its head is comparable to 4x the size of mines! XD  I think it's supposed to be a hamster, but you can kind of argue against it... I seriously have no idea what animal it's supposed to be ~ =3



The Domo on top was won by playing a game at another club's icebreaker (UBC Dragon Seed Connection)!  I'm an exec for this club, so if you're a UBC student... you should JOIN and support the club! ^__^

Seeing the Domo plush, I thought to myself that it would be quite an easy project to make ~ Afterall, Domo is really just a rectangular object with some body parts and a face ~ and so I started my project and finished within two days:



I had some course material to study in between, so it really didn't take the whole two days to make the doll... probably around 2-3 hours per day. =)  I wanted to use a softer yarn to make it, but the only type of yarn that had the closest match to its brown colour was the yarn used in the shown photos.  Unfortunately I didn't have the time to go out and buy some yarn... otherwise I'd use yarn similar to the type I used for my Chibi and Chu Totoro!  Here's a close-up view of my completed Domo:



Domo's mouth is awfully big... so I thought I'd give it some props to match up with it ~ Donuts and cupcakes are some of the favorite desserts among Vancouverities! ;)
