Third Prize!!! Strawberry Clock Hamster Garden.

I got Third Prize in a knit/crochet contest!!!



Yes, this seems all very sudden, but here's the story... Way back near the end of January this year, I entered myself into the 3rd Annual Vanna's Choice Contest using a project which I crocheted. On April 4, I received an e-mail telling me that I was selected as a finalist for the contest and asking me to send in my project to the company in New Jersey, USA. Just three days ago, I received another e-mail notifying me that I got third prize for the contest!! XD

It's my first time entering into a contest and I really did not expect much from it. Because I made the project during the school season (particularly during midterm season while having interviews for Co-op jobs...!!!), I could only spend a limited amount of time working on the project. Nevertheless, here it is: Strawberry Clock Hamster Garden.







I originally planned on crocheting a village. A HUGE village. However, my plan totally got defeated when I realized how much school work I had piling up in front of me. And so in the end, I ended up with only a piece of land which I could only refer to as a garden. It seemed rather plain to just enter a contest using a piece of small crocheted land... and so I turned the project into a table clock just to make it a tad bit more unique. =P I named it The Strawberry Clock Hamster Garden! All in all, I think I spent at least 50 hours on this project. The hamsters on the mat might seem familar to some of you as I actually used them for photos in a post I made a couple months ago. The project was made using 12 different colors of Vanna's Choice yarn and was crocheted free-style, measuring to approximately 14" by 11" by 9" in size. The clock was bought from Ikea but you can't really tell it from the photos since I covered the logo up with a sticker ~ hehe.

Having won third prize this year, I tend to think like most people would do -- "If only I had won first or second prize..." lol. Well, now I know what one of my goals for next year is going to be! ;) But I guess third prize still isn't bad though, especially for my first time entering into a contest and amongst thousands of other entries! Photos of my project along with photos of the projects made by other winners will probably be posted on the contest website sometime later this month or in July. I will post the link to that page once it is out.

Simply Pom Poms*

It was just a couple of days ago when hundreds of thousands of Vancouverites looked up into the sky to find nothing but bits of snow falling down onto the city once again during the end of February.

My parents frowned at the sight of the snow and started digging up for shovels in our garage the very next day when it finally stopped snowing. Luckily, I managed to make some use of the white scenery before it was all gone! =)




I haven't been crocheting any new projects lately due to school assignments and midterms, and Kappa (green doll at the back) was one of the few finished projects that I had at home which has not yet been posted on my blog ~ The scene looked rather plain with just Kappa in it, so I quickly made a couple of little creatures to brighten up the picture by using the fastest and easiest way possible... POM POMS!!

There's nothing like riding on a snow sleigh during the end of winter ~

A Rainy Christmas 2010

"Last Christmas, I gave you my heart..."




I was hoping it would be a white Christmas this year since the news had earlier reported that winter 2010 would be the coldest winter in the past 50 years.  However, according to the weather report for the past few days, this year's Christmas would not be a white one, but would be a rainy one instead.  And so this morning, I woke up, opened up my window blinds and found that indeed the weather report was correct... the day started off with a wet, dull morning.

On the other hand, the malls and streets outside have been filled with warm Christmas music, making me feel the joy in air without needing to see any snow on the ground!  To decorate my house for the annual Christmas party held at my house, I decided to crochet a music band and put it next to our fire place (see photo above).

Domo was featured earlier under a previous post.  I wanted it to be part of the band just because the position of its hands seemed perfect for playing the drums. =P  I gave it an extra Christmas hat to give it some more of a Christmasy theme ~ 





Kronos the bear was made using a similar pattern as my Mochi bear featured in another post of mine.  The design of the scarf was inspired by a scarf that I saw being sold at Banana Republic~ (their scarf was much prettier of course!)





Tami is the one with the big heart on its tummy.  It's supposed to be a squirrel. =)

A Rainy Christmas 2010

"Last Christmas, I gave you my heart..."




I was hoping it would be a white Christmas this year since the news had earlier reported that winter 2010 would be the coldest winter in the past 50 years.  However, according to the weather report for the past few days, this year's Christmas would not be a white one, but would be a rainy one instead.  And so this morning, I woke up, opened up my window blinds and found that indeed the weather report was correct... the day started off with a wet, dull morning.

On the other hand, the malls and streets outside have been filled with warm Christmas music, making me feel the joy in air without needing to see any snow on the ground!  To decorate my house for the annual Christmas party held at my house, I decided to crochet a music band and put it next to our fire place (see photo above).
